Det bør ikke lenger skape overskrifter at ateister kan være for Jesus, men en ateist som er for Gud er relativt nytt.

Det er en av Dawkins’ sympatisører som nå har fått åpnet noen øyne, etter en tur til Afrika. Han sier dermed rett ut, muligens litt hyperbolisk, men dog, at As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God.

Matthew Parris er i det hele tatt ikke redd for å stikke hodet fram.

Missionaries, not aid money, are the solution to Africa’s biggest problem – the crushing passivity of the people’s mindset.

Og dette handler om langt mer enn at de bidrar med praktisk hjelp.

Now a confirmed atheist, I’ve become convinced of the enormous contribution that Christian evangelism makes in Africa: sharply distinct from the work of secular NGOs, government projects and international aid efforts. These alone will not do. Education and training alone will not do. In Africa Christianity changes people’s hearts. It brings a spiritual transformation. The rebirth is real. The change is good.

I used to avoid this truth by applauding – as you can – the practical work of mission churches in Africa. It’s a pity, I would say, that salvation is part of the package, but Christians black and white, working in Africa, do heal the sick, do teach people to read and write; and only the severest kind of secularist could see a mission hospital or school and say the world would be better without it. I would allow that if faith was needed to motivate missionaries to help, then, fine: but what counted was the help, not the faith.

But this doesn’t fit the facts. Faith does more than support the missionary; it is also transferred to his flock. This is the effect that matters so immensely, and which I cannot help observing.

Nå har nok ikke Parris lest Udo Middelmanns svært så tankevekkende bok om temaet, men det forhindrer ikke Dekodet fra å anbefale Christianity versus Fatalistic Religions in the War Against Poverty. Det er sjelden å se en bok som mer tydelig viser hvilken forskjell ulike virkelighetsforståelser og livsvisjoner kan utgjøre i praksis.

Eller til de grader viser at teologi langt fra er tomhet, i motsetning til Dawkins og andre nyateisters tomprat om temaet.

Siden Udo har snakket om dette i tredve år, er det flott at han nå har fått ut en bok om et dessverre fortsatt så aktuelt og avgjørende emne.

I det hele tatt understreker boken at “religion” er en lettere meningsløs sekkebetegnelse. Noe som også “nye ateister” ser ut til å bli.
